Through four editions, Adler's Physiology of the Eye deservedly gained the reputation of being a "stock" item on the library shelves of most ophthalmologists. After publication of the fourth edition, Dr Adler passed the torch to Robert A. Moses. With the assistance of Anders Bill, Edward Cotlier, Balder Gloor, Benjamin Milder, Matthew Newman, and Gerald Shickman, Moses produced the fifth edition, which was published in 1970.
The sixth and current edition of Adler's textbook preserves the overall organization of previous editions but expands the idea of multiple authorship. Each of its 23 chapters has now been revised by a specific author; many of the chapters have been revised by the editor himself. In addition to those who helped with the fifth edition, there are now 11 new contributors. These are Eliot Berson, Peter Bishop, Ronald Burde, Harold Burton,
Adolph Cohen, Nigel Daw, Sidney Futterman, Alan Pearlman, Gill Roper-Hall, W. A.
