Although glaucoma, especially the low-tension variety, is discussed in passing, this book is mainly about the entity I have usually called "ischemic papillitis," which is also known by several other names. The author points out that his designation, "anterior ischemic optic neuropathy" (AION), seems the most accurate name for this condition. In this monograph, Hayreh reviews in detail his present concept of this entity, formed on the basis of nearly two decades of laboratory research, clinical observation, and scholarly thought. He brings together the most pertinent data from his own work and from that of others; there are nearly 600 references. Therefore, the book is useful both as a reference for the researcher and as basic background reading for the clinical ophthalmologist. I found the photographic documentation of his cases particularly helpful.
