This small manual is divided into 14 sections, including examination by simple aids, slit lamp technique, measurements (of exophthalmos, corneal diameter, corneal thickness, temperature, corneal sensitivity), function studies (tear secretion and drainage, mucus production, quality and flow), conjunctival studies (cytology, biopsy, microbiologic aspects), and examination after vital staining.

Some of the studies are familiar to most ophthalmologists; others, such as Alcian blue vital staining and aesthesiometer studies, are unfamiliar or seldom used except by subspecialists.

There is a selected bibliography for each section, running to several hundred references altogether.
