This text owes its new and completely rewritten third edition, the first since 1962, to a warehouse fire that destroyed the remaining copies of the second. Like its earlier versions, it is a compact survey of fundamental and clinical ophthalmology, written for medical students and beginning residents. Instructors and students looking for a course text are likely to compare it to Newell, Scheie ("Adler's"), and other general works; both may find it extremely well suited for introductory study, but of less lasting use as a reference.
Its lucid and engaging style, with a spicing of digressive footnotes on etymology and the folklore of the eye, is the greatest joy of this book. It is always easily read and unambiguously understood. Briefer than the texts of Adler or Newell, it limits itself more carefully to principles and the commoner clinical entities. Surgical technique, with the single exception of cataract extraction, is
