Although this review is primarily concerned with articles which appeared from May 1971 to May 1972, I have not hesitated to include papers that are 1 or 2 years old whenever it seemed appropriate.

The topics covered are as follows: visual system: retina, optic disc, optic nerve, chiasm, geniculostriate pathway, and occipital cortex; ocular motor system: brain stem, peripheral nerves, and ocular muscles and orbit; pupil; trigeminal nerve, facial nerve, and pain; and vascular disorders.

I am increasingly impressed with how very selective these reviews are; many worthwhile papers are left out. What follows are my notes on some of the papers that caught my attention during a year of watching the literature. My comments are in italics.
