In this capably written book, Dr. Jaffe shares with us his comprehensive knowledge of the vitreous and thereby fills a void in the ophthalmic literature. New and improved instrumentation has made detailed examination of the vitreous and peripheral fundus easier than ever before. This has dramatized anew the important role played by this tissue in ocular disease and has created a need for an up-to-date volume on the subject which, happily, the author fills competently. Writing with an engaging and personalized style, Jaffe begins with the embryology of the vitreous in a concise and comprehensive manner. Other early chapters on the physical properties, electron microscopy, anatomy, and methods of examining the vitreous are followed by chapters which relate the vitreous to such clinical situations as cataract surgery, vitreous detachment, diabetes, and retinal detachment.
