Any text which appears in an eighth edition must be of proven value. As is mentioned in the preface, "no great revolutionary changes have appeared as is to be expected in an art which has been thoroughly standardised," and, therefore, this edition differs little from the last edition in 1963. A short section on the use of ultrasound to measure intraocular distances has been added, and two new as well as six substituted figures have been incorporated. The quality of printing has been improved so that the illustrations are more easily read. It is regrettable that errors, such as the reversal of feet and meters in a table of Snellen's notations of visual acuity, have not been corrected from previous editions.
