Revisions in the undergraduate medical curriculum have led the authors of the latest edition of this well-known text to approach the subject from the viewpoint of "basic science and medical disciplines" rather than "structures and coats." This has required a complete rewriting and has resulted in a new book. The opening chapter on "Ophthalmic Entities" serves as an introduction to terminology and is followed by chapters on anatomy, embryology, and genetics. There follow sections on pediatric, medical, and neuro-ophthalmology, while distinct eye conditions are described later. Chapters on physiology and pharmacology are presented last. This arrangement is a radical departure from that used for many years in most standard texts. Time alone will tell whether this is successful. It would appear to be a worthwhile approach.
