Early Discharge After Cataract Operation

IN 1967 the Associated Hospital Service (AHS) of New York released a report summarizing hospital statistics for 4,141 subscribers who had cataract operations in the New York metropolitan area.1 The report dealt with the duration of hospital stay in hospitals of various categories. All of the patients were subscribers of Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans.

I have reviewed these data in relationship to my own experience, which would indicate that patients may be discharged much sooner after cataract surgery than was done in the group represented in the survey. For comparison I have studied the last 100 cases whose cataracts I have removed. Though my group is much smaller than that reported by the AHS, some similarities exist between the groups as shown in Table 1 and 2.

The distribution by age and sex is approximately comparable in the two groups.
