THE PATIENT is a 12-year-old white child who was admitted to the Kaiser Foundation Hospital as an emergency because of an injury to the right orbit by a thrown ball, incurred in a Little League game. This subsequently proved to be a fracture of the right orbital floor, as demonstrated by clinical findings and x-ray films. Surgical repair four days later was uneventful.
Previous examination in the optometry department of KFH on Aug 10, 1967, revealed visual acuity (VA) of 20/20 in each eye with 3 diopters of myopic astigmatic correction. No ocular abnormalities were noted.
Examination of the right eye on the day following the injury disclosed the following ocular findings:
- Traumatic iridocyclitis.
- Sharply delineated and demarcated rent in the posterior lens capsule with early formation of discrete lens opacities indicating the formation of a traumatic cataract.
- Normal fundus.
- VA reduced to 20/80 with -3.00 + 3.00 x 115.
