The secrecy surrounding all things in mainland China presents as much of a challenge to the doctor as to the politician. What kind of medicine and, particularly for us, what kind of ophthalmology is being practiced behind the bamboo curtain after nearly 20 years of the People's Republic? We set ourselves the task of finding out. Contacts in Taiwan and Hong Kong indicated that no ophthalmic journals from Red China were reaching these neighboring stations. Visits to several medical libraries in this country and to the British Medical Library in London were similarly unsuccessful in yielding pertinent ophthalmic literature, but they did provide the complete English-language files of the Chinese Medical Journal. This journal, an organ of the Chinese Medical Association published in Peking, contains many articles on ophthalmic subjects and occasional abstracts from the Chinese-language Journal of Ophthalmology.
