The appointment of a physician to a senior academic post, to Editor-in-Chief of a scientific periodical, or to the directorship of a research institute provides one of the rare opportunities for an objective observer to comment upon the background and accomplishments of the appointee. In striking a balance between unadorned cool commentary and syrupy flattery, it is not difficult to find substantial data in the curriculum vitae of Henry F. Allen of Boston. While a student at St. Mark's School and Harvard College, Henry displayed a greater interest in the humanities than in the sciences. His college degree was granted magna cum laude in Greek history and literature. Following graduation from Harvard Medical School and an abbreviated internship, he served during three campaigns with the American Army in Central Europe.
