Nature favors certain individuals by hereditary endowment above others. In some, a single aptitude leads its owner to the heights of science, art, or human relations. In others, a multiplicity of talents confuses their possessor and inhibits pursuit of any one objective to a productive level. Only a few in each generation combine creative intellect in several areas with drive and discipline to bring fruition in each of them.

Distinguished as an investigator in clinical and laboratory ophthalmology, an administrator gifted in the selection and discovery of talented co-workers, a teacher of teachers as well as of students, David Glendenning Cogan brought to the editorship of the ARCHIVES in 1960 a scientific background matched by few ophthalmologists and a probing, restless mind given to prying up the stones of tradition and habit.
