The Transactions of the Ophthalmological Societies of the United Kingdom for the next year 1964 contains many excellent papers, concerning various aspects of ophthalmology. Discussions of intraocular acrylic lenses, the present status of photocoagulation and detachment surgery, and the various new thoughts on glaucoma surgery are presented effectively. Surgery of the canal of Schlemm, the effects of corticosteroids on suspected late congenital glaucoma, and a combination of an Elliot trephine and iridencleisis operation are suggested additions to the ophthalmologist's armamentarium. Six papers deal with the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, and reports on photocoagulation of diabetic microaneurysms are encouraging. Several papers on retinal detachment surgery emphasize the need for reorganizing basic thoughts and using the simplest procedure to do the job and certainly "not to attempt any procedure on a patient that one would not have employed on oneself."
