It is virtually impossible at present, and will probably be totally so in the future, for a clinician to keep current with therapeutic progress, even in his own specialty.
So many new drugs have side effects of ocular importance that it is essential for the ophthalmologist to have some source to which he can turn when a patient states that he is using a certain medication.
We welcome then the third edition of the "blue bible" which has been the standby of medical students, interns, and practitioners for a generation. Although, for the first time, rapidly expanding knowledge has required multiple authorship, the rigid editing of Drs. Goodman and Gilman remains. The excellent index will be most helpful to clinicians in any specialty. In exploring the "therapeutic jungle," we should take to heart the editors' advice that only a minor fraction of new drugs released each year represents real therapeutic
