One of the most significant things that occurred at the November meetings of the Academy and of the Association for Research in Ophthalmology had nothing to do with either organization. It was a special meeting of academic chiefs to form the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology. This, in turn, was the outgrowth of a small group of department heads who had met informally on several previous occasions to discuss the impact of the new socioeconomy and of the government's influence on the teaching departments of ophthalmology.
Dr. A. E. Maumanee was elected president and Dr. Frank Winter, secretary, with mandates to form the necessary committees of organization and incorporation. The idea behind such an organization is, of course, not new. Similar associations are already operative in otolaryngology, pediatrics, surgery, medicine, and other specialties but the terms of membership and areas of activity in these associations vary widely.
