Being myself guilty of a text on optics for ophthalmologists I know how difficult it can be to produce a book which the average clinician will not only buy but also read and understand. I did not succeed. Physicists whom I did not plan to teach the elements of physical optics called my discussion of this subject amateurish, and ophthalmologists to whom I wanted to show how much fun the derivation of a Stenström'sptical formula is, found the discussion of this subject too difficult. Stenström's book is certainly not amateurish, and it certainly is very much more difficult. However, the new generation of ophthalmologists is so much better educated in the basic sciences than mine was (or even the one following mine), that for them it will be no real hardship to study this volume.
