It is the purpose of this article to present two families with Wagner's disease (hyaloideo-retinalis degeneratio hereditaria), and to attempt to distinguish this disease from others which may be confused with it.
During the past 40 years a small number of articles have appeared in the medical literature pertaining to diseases of the vitreous humor-retinal complex.15,18 Even as early as 1926 Schnyder1 spoke of fine fibrillary threads in the vitreous cavity. Since then a number of pedigrees have been published concerning vitreous humor-retinal degenerations. We have grouped the diseases involving this vitreous humor-retinal complex for our purposes into five distinct diseases which have a common denominator in that they all can progress to retinal detachment.
