To the Editor:

Although Dr. Magnuson's estimate of 99% treatment "by the seat of one's pants" seem optimistic, clinicians who correlate external ocular signs with etiologic agents can cope with most external ocular disease by empirical methods.

The "extreme expense" of smears and scrapings seems inflated. A Wright's stain requires, not an "ivory tower," but, merely the microscope used in medical school. Cultures require a competent laboratory, but what other branch of medicine can do without them? . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
