The outstanding feature of this fourth edition of ``Einführung in die Augenheilkunde" is its excellent photographs of ocular diseases. Both fundus photographs and those of external conditions are remarkably well done. The text, which is semi-outline in form, includes brief descriptions of clinical appearances, diagnostic procedures, and treatment. Only cursory mention is made of such problems as thyroid disease and orbital tumors, and a few diseases, such as familial dysautonomia, are not mentioned.
It is difficult to classify this textbook, which is too elementary for the ophthalmologist and whose approach is not sufficiently physiologic for the medical student. Nevertheless, the fine photography should make the book a useful reference in ophthalmology for clinicians in other fields, who can read a little German.
