A Technique Using Synthetic Silicone Rubber Tubing (Silastic)

Epiphora from stenosis of the common lacrimal canaliculus occurs rather frequently; previously recommended procedures for repair are technically difficult,^1-3 and the results have not been uniformly successful. A recently developed technique using synthetic silicone rubber tubing (Silastic)* to restore patency to the stenosed common canaliculus has proved to be simple to perform and the results have been most gratifying.

Materials

Medical adhesive (Vivosil) is used to form two small knobs (doughnut like) around the circumference of a silicone rubber tube (Silastic—#372, 0.040" x 0.090") which is 5 or 6 mm in length. These knobs should be placed 3 or 4 mm apart, and the tube should be prepared 24 or more hours before the procedure is performed.

Method
