This issue of the ARCHIVES contains the first of what we hope will be an annual communication from that delightfully literate English colleague, Mr. Patrick Trevor-Roper. It is a letter which we solicited enquiring into the thinkings and doings of ophthalmologists overseas, but the happy proposal of an annual report is the author's. His informative comments leaven the heady scientific papers which constitute our standard diet.
Although the basic tenets of ophthalmology are monotonously similar the world over, how ophthalmology is practiced and what the practitioners think and talk about varies with the local economy, traditions, and, alas, with politics. Letters can express far better than formal articles this important aspect of our lives. We are grateful, therefore, to our London correspondent for this annual commentary on ophthalmology in England and trust our readers will find it as interesting as we did.
