Known for 17 years as the Ophthalmic Pathology Club, this unique organization will henceforth be called the Verhoeff Society. It thus does honor to one of the pioneers in ophthalmic pathology as does the Cushing Society in neurosurgery and the Gonin Society in retinal diseases.
The first meeting of this pathology club took place in April, 1947, at what was then the Army Institute of Pathology in Washington. The idea for such a meeting was spawned by Drs. Benjamin Rones, John McLean, and Theodore Sanders. Present at this first meeting were 25 persons subsequently considered charter members.* More than half are still active participants in the present limited enrollment of 30 members.
The format of the initial meeting has persisted. Each participant brings a sufficient number of slides of his most interesting case of the year for distribution to other members. During the two-day session each has an opportunity to
