Known for 17 years as the Ophthalmic Pathology Club, this unique organization will henceforth be called the Verhoeff Society. It thus does honor to one of the pioneers in ophthalmic pathology as does the Cushing Society in neurosurgery and the Gonin Society in retinal diseases.

The first meeting of this pathology club took place in April, 1947, at what was then the Army Institute of Pathology in Washington. The idea for such a meeting was spawned by Drs. Benjamin Rones, John McLean, and Theodore Sanders. Present at this first meeting were 25 persons subsequently considered charter members.* More than half are still active participants in the present limited enrollment of 30 members.
