Advances in Ophthalmology, edited by Professor E. B. Streiff, is a trilingual Swiss publication devoted to reviews and critiques of ophthalmic progress. This, the 14th volume, is divided into three sections: (1) "Hemorrhagic Glaucoma, a Critical Consideration" written in German by Sibylle Krüger of Basel, (2) "Spontaneous and Experimental Retinal Degeneration in Animals" in French by P. Karli, Strasbourg, and (3) "Retina (1952-1959)" in German by W. Straub and M. Severin, Marburg.

Hemorrhagic glaucoma, following central retinal vein thrombosis, is a complicated subject, and Kruger ably discusses our present understanding of the cause and treatment of the thrombosis and of the resulting glaucoma. After pointing out the many variables in etiology and development of this disease, the author expresses serious doubt of the efficacy of anticoagulant therapy. This excellent analysis is accompanied by a fine bibliography.
