The effectiveness of topical -chymotrypsin in the therapy of herpetic keratitis in man has been reported.1,2 These results are in conflict with those reported for the use of chymotrypsin in experimentally induced herpetic keratitis in the rabbit, where an enhanced destruction of the cornea occurred.3 Recently, a similar experience in man was recorded.4
The efficacy of topical administration of idoxuridine (IDU) has been established in the treatment of experimental herpes simplex keratitis in rabbits.5-7
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the use of topical chymotrypsin solution in treating herpes simplex keratitis in rabbits with the use of the lavage technique of administration reported successful in man.1,2 Three series were undertaken, consisting of (1) a comparison of chymotrypsin with idoxuridine, (2) of chymotrypsin with lavage of isotonic saline, and (3) of chymotrypsin with untreated controls.
