—I have read the editorial ``Retinotoxic Drugs'' with interest (ARCH OPHTHAL 69:545, 1963).

When I was in the Army, following my residency at Wills Eye Hospital, I fortunately came in contact with the late Dr. George E. deSchweinitz, and he pointed out to me that there were two kinds of retinitis pigmentosa: one that might be more properly designated pigmentary degeneration of the retina, and the other, as he called it, retinochoroiditis of the pigmentosa type; the latter apparently being the one produced by the drugs that you mention, and evidently being inflammatory in nature. It is interesting to speculate whether there are two kinds of retinitis pigmentosa of different origins, or possibly two different types, as you appear to infer, caused by different mechanisms; and also to realize that many of our old and observant clinicians knew practically as much about some of these things as . . .
