To the Editor:

—As a bilateral aphakic ophthalmologist, I have been very much interested in the Letters to the Editor in the May, 1963, issue of the ARCHIVES OF OPHTHALMOLOGY pertaining to the ring scotoma and its Jack-in-the-Box phenomenon encountered by the spectacle corrected aphakic. I do not believe anyone questions the existence of the ring scotoma. However, there are some who may question the existence of the Jack-in-the-Box effect.

Regarding the size of the scotoma: in my case, with 3-mm pupils, wearing 45-mm aspheric lenses at a vertex distance of 12-mm and a power of OD+10.00+ 0.75 X 20=20/10, OS +8.50+1.00 X 160=20/10, the scotoma measures 15 degrees using a one-degree test object at 330 mm. The position of this scotoma is between 40 and 55 degrees. Experimenting in the parking lot, I found that this scotoma obscures a Cadillac at 45 feet and a Volkswagen at 40 feet. . . .
