There is no agreement as to what should be included in a basic textbook of ophthalmology, but in assuming the editorship of the 23rd edition of May's Manual of Diseases of the Eye, Dr. James H. Allen has fulfilled Dr. May's original objective: "to present a concise, practical and systematic manual of the diseases of the eye intended for the student and the general practitioner."

The text has been extensively rewritten, and the section on external ocular diseases, reflecting one of the editor's special interests, is to be commended. On page 49 is a simple diagram for making a protective or condensation eye shield, an illustration which the uninitiated would have difficulty finding elsewhere. Unfortunately, several statements appear which are not universally accepted.
