To the Editor:

—The procurement of eyes for corneal transplants is running far behind the need. Catherine Rhoads, Executive Director of the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration in New York City states that the organization receives eyes there at the rate of about 1,000 per year and would need 50% more to meet its current needs. A similar situation exists in other cities.

I learned the scope of this need in the course of editing a booklet on funeral reform, "A Manual of Simple Burial." My original purpose was to explain the significance of simple burial and to tell how to obtain simplicity and economy in funeral arrangements, but I wound up devoting nearly half the book to the subject of the bequeathal of eyes for sight restoration and bodies for education and research. Included also is comprehensive information concerning the problems and procedures of such bequeathals.
