Manometric Determination of Monoamine Oxidase in Cat Ocular Tissues

Introduction

In a previous communication, we have reported the presence of the enzyme monoamine oxidase in the various ocular structures of the rabbit when determined manometrically, measuring the enzymic activity in terms of oxygen uptake by the substrate tyramine.1 In view of the differences in activity of monoamine oxidase in the same region of various species elsewhere in the body, it was considered desirable to determine the enzyme activity in the various ocular tissues of the common laboratory cat.2

Materials and Methods

Cats of either sex, each weighing 2 to 3.5 kg., were utilized.

Table 1 shows the material pooled for a single experiment. The rest of the procedure was identical to the one employed in the previous study, which has been described in detail elsewhere.1

Results

The results of the monoamine oxidase activity studies in the cat ocular tissues are reported in Table 2.
