Tonography has greatly added to our understanding of aqueous humor dynamics, but we have few observations of the early histologic changes in the eye induced by elevated intraocular pressure. This contrasts with the abundant observations that have been made on the late changes.
The present paper reports a study of the early histopathologic changes induced in rabbits by experimental elevation of the intraocular pressure.
Materials and Methods
The animals were adult male rabbits, both pigmented and albino, weighing 2.0 kg. Under general anesthesia (pentobarbital sodium) a suspension of cotton fragments averaging 0.025 mm. was injected into the anterior chamber. The animals were then given 1% atropine and a mild antiseptic locally and 400,000 units of penicillin intramuscularly for the subsequent 3 days.
