At present there is no completely satisfactory treatment for herpes simplex keratitis, as evidenced by the high incidence of recurrences, the stromal scarring from repeated attacks and repeated cauterization treatments, and the prolonged course of the stromal forms of the disease. Because of this, various methods of treatment are being studied, and the purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary report of the results of copper sulfate iontophoresis treatment of herpes simplex keratitis.
Materials
Twenty patients with various forms of herpes simplex keratitis were treated, of which there were 9 eyes with dendritic ulcers; 8 eyes with acute or chronic ulcers and stromal involvement; 2 eyes with reactivation of deep stromal as well as epithelial keratitis; and 1 eye with disciform keratitis. Steroid preparations had been used by 5 of the patients prior to their first visit; 4 topically and 1 systemically as well as topically.
