In most respects this is an ideal book (really a booklet) for medical students, for professional people having superficial contact with ophthalmology, and for certain patients who have the curiosity and interest to "read up" on their diseases. It is less than 100 small pages in length, abundantly illustrated, and written in a pleasingly readable style.

The ophthalmologist will find it of use in his library as reference for others but will scarcely have need to read it himself. As the author states, it provides only an elementary recitation of eye diseases which could do little more than introduce the subject. Physiology and pathology are left out almost entirely—surprisingly, since the author is listed as Curator of a Department of Pathology. Moreover, the clinician may find some hesitation in accepting conjunctivitis as one of the causes of an acutely painful eye, or the unqualified observation that acute glaucoma is due . . .
