This book, which contains the papers and the discussions of the Second Conference of the Retina Foundation held May 30 and 31, 1958, deals with the more complicated forms of retinal detachment, their cause and treatment. Retinopexy is scarcely mentioned; the role of the vitreous in etiology and therapy is stressed, and various methods of scleral shortening and sclerochoroidal infolding are described.

The text is divided into five parts. In the first, the anatomic and physiologic properties of the vitreous body are discussed; Zimmerman and Straatsma describe their studies on the "Anatomic Relationships of the Retina to the Vitreous Body and to the Pigment Epithelium." Balazs presents his investigations of the "Physiology of the Vitreous Body." In both papers the properties of vitreous cells and the interrelationship of retina and vitreous are stressed.
