A Matter of Editorial Policy

The most recent estimate for the cost of publishing articles in biologic journals is 6 cents per word.1 In the ARCHIVES OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, an average unillustrated article consisting of 6 pages would thus cost approximately 250 dollars and a whole issue would amount to some 7,000 dollars.

To some of us this seems expensive but we must piously assume that the cost is justified. We take solace in contemplation of the immeasurably more expensive ventures of present day publications which yield less valuable records for posterity. Yet the cost does remind us of our obligation to keep verbiage to a minimum and to publish only those articles which survive careful scrutiny. We hope it will also remind those who wish to communicate their thoughts and observations to others of the virtue of brevity.
