Microscopic examination of the scleral shell of an eye after evisceration is unusual but has been reported. Waldispühl¹⁶ reported a case in 1896, de Schweinitz ₁₅ in 1900, and Oliver ₁₁ in 1900. Burch ₅ alluded to the microscopic changes in 1940, indicating that he had also studied the scleral shell. Although others have undoubtedly examined similar specimens, there have been no reports in the recent literature.

Report of Case

A 49-year-old Negro male was first seen at University Hospital on Sept. 1, 1960, with a chief complaint of pain in the right eye. Past history revealed that he had had glaucoma for 5 years, and had had an evisceration of the right globe with implantation of an 18 mm. plastic ball because of absolute glaucoma in May, 1959. He had also had a sclerectomy with iridectomy in the left eye at the same time.
