To those of us involved in processing manuscripts for the ARCHIVES OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, the Chicago office is that division of the A.M.A. where papers to be published in its specialty journals get their final polish before being returned to the author as initial galley and to the printer as final galley. It is a department headed by Mr. G. S. Cooper through whose hands one specialty journal goes to press every three days.

The Chicago office properly requires some degree of uniformity in format for its A.M.A. publications. Though specific recommendations are periodically published in the ARCHIVES OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, these editorial columns will serve to echo some of the plaints and suggestions that come from the Chicago office. One of the most recent is in regard to references.
