A Comparison of Tonography with Three Schiötz Weights in Normal Eyes

During a recent visit to London my attention was drawn by Mr. Perkins and Dr. Gloster to a paper by Wirth1 regarding tonography carried out with 5.5, 7.5, and 10 gm. weights of the Schiøtz tonometer. The conclusions which this author recorded suggested that in normal humans the coefficient of aqueous outflow (C) was considerably lower in the same eye when measured with the 7.5 than with the 5.5 gm. weight and even lower when the 10 gm. weight was used. The author states that the coefficient of aqueous outflow of normal subjects obtained with the 10 gm. weight was of the same order of magnitude as is found in glaucomatous eyes. If these findings were confirmed, then our theoretical concepts of tonography must be altered and the practical application of the test in differentiating cases of chronic simple glaucoma from their normal counterparts must be seriously reexamined, especially
