Composition of the Vitreous Humor in Relation to That of Plasma and Aqueous Humors

The present investigation was undertaken to provide information concerning the comparative composition of those substances present in highest concentrations in the vitreous humor, the aqueous humors, particularly that from the posterior chamber, and the plasma. Such information is needed to interpret and quantitate the results of dynamic studies on the intraocular fluids because loss or gain of a substance to or from the vitreous humor is one of the factors determining the steady state between blood and aqueous humor of the posterior chamber.

The composition of the vitreous humor in relation to that of plasma and anterior aqueous humor has been studied by a number of investigators,1-15 but none has reported analytical data on the composition of aqueous taken from the posterior chamber, and it is this information which is needed most for studies of intraocular fluid dynamics.
