To the Editor:

—I refer to the article by Dr. Duane, "Superficial Keratitis Due to Plastic Foreign Bodies" (A. M. A. ARCH. OPHTH. 61:141 [Jan.] 1959).

Such particles, sometimes whole clusters of them, are seen very often in the Eye Clinics of the Garment Workers Union here in New York. I have nothing to add to the fine description in the article. The treatment recommended there is removal with metal spud or needle, as "they will not dislodge with cotton swab."

I would like to note that they are dislodged easily by wiping with a fine bluntpointed wet cotton-on-wood applicator, if wiping is done with slight pressure. There was not one particle to resist dislodgement in this way. There are never abrasions or scratches. The cornea shows after removal of the foreign body only a faint outline of the place where the particle has been. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
