In a previous paper1 the changes in the viscosity of the filtrate from rabbit vitreous induced by hormones have been published. Here the changes of the content of hyaluronic acid will be reported and the viscosity and concentration of hyaluronic acid, correlated to find out whether other factors than concentration might be responsible for the viscosity changes.
The hyaluronic acid was not determined directly, because no methods are available for estimating such small amounts of hyaluronic acid as are contained in single vitreous bodies. Therefore, the hexosamine method elaborated by Elson and Morgan (1933),2 in Blix's modification, was used. Several authors (Meyer et al., 1936,3 1937,4 19385; Pirie, 19486; Balazs, 19547; Schweer et al., 1955,8 1956,9,10 and others) have determined the hyaluronic acid as hexosamines, one of its components, and found this method, although not perfect, of sufficient accuracy for the
