Thermal Detachment of the Anterior Lamella of the Anterior Lens Capsule

Exfoliation of portions of the anterior lens capsule from the effect of heat was recognized and studied extensively by Ascher,1 Elschnig,2 Vogt,3 and other European investigators 35 years ago. For about 10 years thereafter reports in the European literature on various aspects of this condition appeared frequently, but they have been scarce since then. The condition is probably appearing less often because of less exposure to heat in the modern manufacture of steel and glass and because of better protection of eyes with filters. Although heat cataract, which begins at the posterior pole of the lens, and detachment of the anterior lamellae of the anterior capsule may be associated, either may appear independently as a separate clinical entity. Vogt and his co-workers and other investigators have shown that heat cataract is produced by infrared rays and may occur without detachment of the lens capsule.
