Certificate in Ophthalmic Surgery.
—The present certificate of the American Board of Ophthalmology gives no indication of a specialist's surgical ability. It merely indicates that he is familiar with the principles of surgery. This has been necessary because many outstanding ophthalmologists do not perform surgery. In addition, in some instances the specialist has received excellent training in ophthalmology but with little opportunity to develop surgery.
It is for this reason that the Board has decided to set up an examination for certification in ophthalmic surgery.
The preliminary requirements and the plan of examination follow.
Preliminary Requirements.
- —Possession of a certificate of the American Board of Ophthalmology for a minimum period of three years.
- Ethical standards complying with the principles of ethics of the American Medical Association and the candidate's county or local Medical Society.
