This book reports on recent examinations of the correlations between eye and midbrain.

Becker reports upon discovery of a nuclear area of the sympathetic nervous system in the third neuron of the retina and its proved and still hypothetic actions. A chapter is added on the topochemistry of the retinal layers (Eichner). Rohen and Mrodzinsky record the structural changes of the nuclei of the retinal nerve cells due to light stimuli. Frey describes the exact course of the pathway of autonomous nerve fibers from the eye to the recessus opticus of the diencephalon and reports on its phylogenetic correlations.

The influence of light on the metabolism of the body by means of the eye is treated by Hollwich. After the report of numerous experiments on animals the influence of light on the pathophysiology of man is demonstrated.
