Concurrence of Macular Edema with Cataract Extraction

By its very nature, macular edema must be a common occurrence after cataract extraction, and yet little reference to it can be found in the literature. I have canvassed several ophthalmologists for their experiences. Among my confreres in Montreal, none * had been aware of it before my original paper, in 1954.1 Kirby ¶ stated that he had "seen it frequently after glaucoma surgery but not after cataract operation." He felt that it is likely to follow any opening of the eye. Stallard {ddagger} stated that he had had two cases. Chandler § believes that he has had several cases and that the patient usually gets well spontaneously. Since my report in 1954 sporadic cases have been reported to me.
