The purpose of this text is primarily to prepare students in both the basic sciences and the clinical fields of ophthalmology. It applies in particular to those students who are about to take the London "Diploma in Ophthalmology," which corresponds to the examinations given by the American Board of Ophthalmology. The selection of material is good, and, as is usual with almost all English texts, the writing is a model of style. Clarity of expression must depend upon clarity of thought, and those who can express themselves well probably think clearly. The ease with which a student can assimilate knowledge from a book is in large measure determined by the style of presentation. This is particularly true in subjects where reasoning processes must be applied, as in the complex phenomena of strabismus.
