This work is reported to augment the accumulating information on etiology and management of retinal detachment. It reports a high incidence of retinal breaks seen in presumably normal eyes. It is the firstreport of subclinical retinal breaks examined ophthalmoscopically in unfixed specimens, followed by histological study. It reports horseshoe, as well as round, breaks seen in presumably normal eyes.

TECHNIQUE

Eye bank eyes were used. They were presumably normal eyes and had been refrigerated in saline from two and a half days to two weeks before examination. A total of 11 eyes was studied. The eye was placed on an examining stand. The iris and lens were removed. A contact glass was placed over the opening in the cornea and the space between the glass and the vitreous face filled with saline.
