To the Editor:

—A review on the research memoir "Refraction and Body-Growth" appeared in the March, 1955, issue of the ARCHIVES, page 460. A brief comment on some of the points raised in the review is here presented.

The reviewer refers to the statistically significant differences in refraction between the "Untouchables" and the "Brahmins" presented in the book. The author is inclined to attribute these differences to genetic factors. The reviewer remarks that the author does not enlarge on the dietary difference in the two castes. The author feels that the higher heights in the Untouchables, as compared with the Brahmins, cannot possibly be linked up with malnutrition, which might cause the opposite effect. Myopic trend with higher heights in the Untouchables, therefore, may better be explained by genetic assumption than by any environmental factor, such as diet.
