To the Editor:
—Dr. Ascher's invaluable observations on aqueous veins lend considerable respect to his views on their role in the ocular circulation, and I have read with great interest his review of the present status of aqueous veins in the April issue of the ARCHIVES. I feel, however, that in citing my own small contribution to knowledge of the phenomenon of blood reflux in the canal of Schlemm (page 446) he may have been misled.
My 1949-1950 observations with a Goldman gonioprism, adapted to produce scleral pressure, showed a blood reflux into the canal of Schlemm in a number of eyes exhibiting signs of chronic simple glaucoma, and my later experience has not led me to believe that these cases were exceptional. It would be incorrect, in my view, to cite this finding, as Dr. Ascher does, as evidence that blood rarely appears in the canal of Schlemm in
