A CASE OF PHTHISIS BULBI DUE TO CHICKENPOX

THIS CASE is of interest, since most ophthalmic manifestations in cases of chickenpox are referred to as of minor importance.1 A case of late corneal involvement was reported by Packard, cited by Tassman,1 Rosenbaum,2 and Falls and Beall.3 Conjunctival lesions involving the limbus have been reported by Duke-Elder4 and Veeneklaas.5 Duke-Elder6 mentions a case in which "an acute uveitis resulting in phthisis bulbi was noted by Hutchison (1886-87) in a case of chickenpox—but whether this was incidental or not is difficult to say." In the present case also it is difficult to say whether the development of phthisis bulbi was incidental or not, but the beginning of a severe intraocular inflammation so soon after the onset of chickenpox, the severity of the infection, and its fulminating nature certainly implicate chickenpox in one way or another.
